hampered, an immune deficiency disease may result. The Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases are a group of disorders caused by basic defects in immune function that are inherent in the body. Some are relatively common, while others are relatively rare. Although there are some that affect a single cell or protein of the immune system, others may affect more than one component of the immune system. Although primary immune deficiency diseases may differ from one another in many ways, they share one important feature. They all result from a defect in one of the functions of the normal immune system.

The primary immune deficiencies result from defects in T-lymphocytes, B-lymphocytes, phagocytic cells or the complement system. Most of them are inherited diseases and may run in families, such as X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA) or Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID). Other primary immune deficiencies, such as Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID) and Selective IgA Deficiency do not appear to be inherited in a clear cut or predictable fashion. In these disorders the cause is unknown but the interaction of genetic and environmental factors may play a role in their causation

AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERS

Autoimmune diseases refer to autoimmune reaction, antibodies and immune cells target the body’s own healthy tissues, signaling the body to attack them. For example, you might have a genetic tendency to develop a disease and then, under the right conditions, an outside invader like a virus might trigger it.

Some of the diseases that fall into the autoimmune category include autoimmune hemolytic anemia, autoimmune hepatitis, dermatomyositis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, Graves’ disease, Guillain-Barre syndrome, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, myasthenia gravis, some forms of myocarditis and multiple sclerosis.

For more information, please visit: Web MD

DERMATOMYOSITIS

Dermatomyositis is an idiopathic inflammatory myopathy with characteristic cutaneous findings that occur in children and adults. Rarely, patients have generalized weakness without ocular muscle weakness. Bulbar muscle weakness is also common, along with weakness of head extension and flexion. Limb weakness may be more severe proximally than distally. Isolated limb muscle weakness is the presenting symptom in fewer than 10% of patients. Weakness progresses from mild to more severe over weeks or months, with exacerbations and remissions. In some infants, it can be life-threatening. A, B, AB, and O are the four major blood types. The types are based on small substances (molecules) on the surface of the blood cells. When people who have one blood type receive blood from someone with a different blood type, it may cause their immune system to react. This is called ABO incompatibility. Rh incompatibility is a condition that develops when a pregnant woman has Rh-negative blood and the baby in her womb has Rh-positive blood.

HDN may develop when a mother and her unborn baby have different blood types (called “incompatibility”).
